Emergency Pediatric Medicine, Pediatric Emergencies

The Pediatric Emergency Division at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center is staffed 24 hours a day - 7 days a week by board certified emergency medicine pediatric attendings and pediatric emergency medicine nurses.

We accept walk-in patients, ambulance arrivals and those referred by pediatricians for acute care and/or diagnostic assistance. All patients are seen under the direct supervision of the pediatric emergency medicine attendings.

The Pediatric Emergency Division of Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center is a New York State Designated Level I Pediatric Trauma Receiving Hospital for traumatically injured children--the only children's hospital on Long Island with this designation. We provide outstanding emergency pediatric medicine care for infants, adolescents and young adults 24 hours a day - 7 days a week.

For children with pediatric traumas, a trauma code is activated and the trauma team is assembled prior to the patient's arrival to the emergency department. The team consists of a pediatric emergency medicine attending, a pediatric surgeon, a chief resident in surgery, an anesthesia attending, and pediatric trauma nurses as well as other support services from the emergency department. Neurosurgeons, orthopedists, and all other surgical subspecialties are available for consultation as well.

If your child is evaluated and treated, and it is determined that ongoing treatment is necessary, your child will be admitted to the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. During their stay they will see specialists and be cared for by a dedicated, caring and professional staff while receiving state of the art care.

When it is time for your child to return home, your child’s medical team will provide care instructions for home and any directions for follow up with a specialist or your child’s pediatrician. Our staff will contact your child’s pediatrician with the information about their stay with the Emergency Division, our findings, and our recommendations. From there, your pediatrician or the specialists may have your child come in for additional testing, a change in the treatment plan, or just to check that the treatment given was effective. Please keep any follow up appointments within the time frame suggested.

Our Pediatric Emergency Division will provide excellent pediatric emergency care for your child, stressing compassion and respect for physical as well as mental and emotional needs.
