Cardiothoracic surgery at Cohen Children’s Medical Center

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cohen Children’s Medical Center performs heart and lung surgery on infants, children and teens, as well as adults with congenital heart diseases. Our team of world-renowned pediatric heart surgeons has extensive experience with congenital and acquired heart disease, including some of the rarest heart disorders.

Cohen Children’s Medical Center is the only children’s hospital on Long Island and one of approximately 10 children’s hospitals in the state offering comprehensive heart surgery. Each year, our pediatric heart surgeons have one of the largest pediatric cardiac surgical volumes in New York state.

We are committed to the very best outcomes for our patients, which is why we can proudly say we have one of the highest surgical survival rates in the state, despite taking some of the most complex cases. A large part of our success and reputation for excellence lies in our combination of innovative technologies, quality care and compassion.

Cohen Children's Medical Center is the only hospital on Long Island with the ability to provide extra corporeal membrane support, which is the use of a special machine to help balance the oxygen level in the blood for longer periods of time. Extra corporeal membrane support is routinely used to care for high-risk pediatric cardiac surgery patients. Throughout the stay, nurses with special interest and training in patients with congenital heart problems provide care and assistance at every level.

Why choose us?

In the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cohen Children’s Heart Center, our mission is to ensure that children have access to exceptional cardiac surgical care and receive the very best care possible in an environment specially designed for children.

Cutting-edge surgeries. Cohen Children’s Medical Center is on the cutting edge of surgical care for babies, children, teens and young adults. Our highly-trained cardiothoracic surgeons utilize the latest surgical and non-surgical techniques to correct a wide spectrum of life-threatening heart defects. We are able to treat children even before they’re born with our advanced fetal surgical program.

Multidisciplinary care. In cases where we need to, we consult with a full range of specialists including maternal fetal medicine and surgery specialists. We work closely with the cardiologists in the Cohen Children’s Heart Center to ensure our patients are receiving the best treatment option for their unique needs. We offer hybrid procedures so our cardiologists can treat some heart problems non-invasively while we perform open heart surgery. This allows children to spend less time in the hospital and decreases the risk of surgical complications.

Family-centered care. You are an expert about your child. We recognize and appreciate the knowledge parents and families provide when it comes to the needs of their children. That is why families are an integral member of the care team. Parents and family members round with us every day and are included in the treatment planning process, so they understand the decisions that are being made and can provide greater insight.
