Cohen Children's Heart Center

It is scary when something is  wrong with your child’s heart. There’s no instruction manual. And that’s why we’re here.

Cohen Children’s Heart Center has a long reputation of providing exceptional cardiovascular care. We have one of the highest volume programs in New York state and are the only children's hospital on Long Island that offers comprehensive pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery care from pregnancy through infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Our multidisciplinary team of highly specialized cardiology and heart surgery experts provides care to patients of all ages, from newborns to adults born with heart disease, as well as children who acquire a heart problem. We offer patient-centered, family-friendly care at locations across the New York metropolitan area, and at our dedicated children’s hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York.

The center’s pediatric cardiology subspecialty programs  provide a wide array of diagnostic, medical, interventional, and surgical treatments. All patients receive individualized treatment plans that are devised with the parents and family members and take into account individual goals and ensure the best  outcomes. Through significant research and clinical trials, we are able to offer patients treatments to complex cases that were previously untreatable.

In the past few years Cohen Children’s Medical Center has made considerable investments in the quality of care that is provided. In 2013, the 125,000-square-foot inpatient pavilion opened its doors. This pavilion includes a pediatric intensive care unit, dedicated diagnostic and interventional cardiac catherization and electrophysiology laboratory as well as the region’s largest dedicated pediatric emergency department. The new state-of-the-art  cardiac catheterization laboratory is dedicated exclusively to diagnosing and treating cardiac conditions in children. The catheterization lab offers the lowest-dose radiation commercially available and has led to a substantial reduction in radiation exposure for patients and staff. To further minimize diagnostic radiation, we have a well-established cardiac magnetic residence program. We are also one of four locations in the region, and the only one on Long Island, qualified to implant the Melody pulmonary valve. Additionally, we have created a new hybrid program combining catheter-based technology and surgery, enabling  our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to repair our patients’ hearts collaboratively.

By the numbers

The patient experience has many dimensions and it is uniquely personal. The personalized care, family-centered rounds, and integrated services ensure our ability to enhance physical comfort and reduce enxiety for the patients and ther family.  We are highly committed to improvement of the quality, efficiency and overall value of the health care that we provide. To reach these goals, we have implemented a variety of measures to ensure a culture of safety and quality so that the patients receive optimal care in a safe environment. We constantly track overall outcomes of our children to identify areas for improvement and to provide quality statistics for families.  We are also an active participant in various national registries, which track outcomes of quality measurements . The data collected from the registries facilitates performance measurements, benchmarking, and quality improvement for hospitals caring for patients with heart disease.
