Cohen Children's Heart Center

It is scary when something is wrong with your child’s heart. There is no instruction manual. And that is why we are here.

Cohen Children’s Heart Center has a long reputation of providing exceptional cardiovascular care. We have one of the highest volume programs in New York State and are the only children's hospital on Long Island that offers comprehensive pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery care from pregnancy through infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Our multidisciplinary team of highly specialized cardiology and heart surgery experts provides care to patients of all ages, from newborns to adults born with heart disease, as well as children who acquire a heart problem. We offer patient-centered, family-friendly care at locations across the New York metropolitan area and Long Island, and inpatient care at our dedicated children’s hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York.

The center’s pediatric cardiology subspecialty programs  provide a wide array of diagnostic, medical, interventional, and surgical treatments. All patients receive individualized treatment plans that are devised with the parents and family members and take into account individual goals and ensure the best  outcomes. Through significant research and clinical trials, we are able to offer patients treatments to complex cases that were previously untreatable. We offer same day or next day appointments in our outpatient and inpatient settings to ensure patients are able to get the care they need immediately.

In the past few years Cohen Children’s Medical Center has made considerable investments in the quality of care that is provided. In 2013, the 125,000-square-foot inpatient pavilion opened its doors. This pavilion includes a pediatric intensive care unit, dedicated diagnostic and interventional cardiac catherization and electrophysiology laboratory as well as the region’s largest dedicated pediatric emergency department. The new state-of-the-art  cardiac catheterization laboratory is dedicated exclusively to diagnosing and treating cardiac conditions in children. The catheterization lab offers the lowest-dose radiation commercially available which has led to a substantial reduction in radiation exposure for patients and staff. To further minimize diagnostic radiation, we have a well-established cardiac magnetic residence program. We are also one of four locations in the region, and the only one on Long Island, qualified to implant the Melody pulmonary valve. Additionally, we have created a new hybrid program combining catheter-based technology and surgery, enabling our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to repair our patients’ hearts collaboratively.

A “culture of safety” and commitment to quality patient care

The patient experience has many dimensions and it is uniquely personal. The personalized care, family-centered rounds, and integrated services ensure our ability to enhance physical comfort and reduce anxiety for the patients and their families. We are highly committed to improvement of the quality, efficiency and overall value of the health care that we provide. To reach these goals, we have implemented a variety of measures to ensure a culture of safety and quality so that the patients receive optimal care in a safe environment. We constantly track overall outcomes of our children to identify areas for improvement and to provide quality statistics for families. We are also an active participant in various national registries, which track outcomes of quality measurements . The data collected from the registries facilitates performance measurements, benchmarking, and quality improvement for hospitals caring for patients with heart disease.

Leaders in quality. The health and safety of our patients are paramount. We work closely with nationally recognized reporting agencies to track our rate of infections, mortality, and other quality metrics to make sure our patients are cared for in the safest environment possible.

Advanced research and technology. We continue to participate in both basic and clinical national collaborative research projects that study the causes of congenital heart disease as well as the best treatment and prevention strategies.  We are currently using three dimensional imaging and printing to assist in the planning of interventional and surgical procedures.
