The Cancer Center of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center treats newly diagnosed and relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia in children, adolescents and young adults. Patients are treated utilizing National Cancer Institute funded Children’s Oncology (COG) protocols for newly diagnosed and relapsed leukemia, as well as with in-house protocols . If bone marrow transplantation is required, standards established by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), a certified bone marrow transplantation program, are utilized.
Therapy is delivered in our inpatient hematology/oncology 18 bed unit or our 13 bed outpatient pediatric ambulatory chemotherapy and transfusion unit.
Staff includes our board certified pediatric oncology attendings, four nurse practitioners, two physician assistants, a psychologist and two social workers. The pediatric leukemia team is headed by Arlene Redner, M.D.
Procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, biopsies and lumbar punctures are performed under sedation provided by pediatric anesthesiologists.
Comprehensive care is provided in both the outpatient and inpatient setting with nursing care provided by pediatric nurses trained in pediatric oncology.
